Large country garden

Borders, paths and new areas, renovated over several years.

A large country garden just outside Bath, redesigned and renovated over many years. Herbaceous borders were restored, old pathways reinstated and new areas created, so the whole garden works again without losing its relaxed, rambling character.

The brief

The garden had outgrown itself. The aim was to bring back structure and colour to the borders and make the different parts of the garden easy to reach and enjoy, while keeping the informal feel that suits a country setting.

What we did

The work was phased over several seasons. Herbaceous borders were cleared and replanted, and gravel paths were reinstated to link the house, lawns and seating areas. New areas were added along the way, including a deck with a fire pit beside a planted bank, and a sheltered corner for a hot tub against an old stone wall.

The planting

Echinacea and bergamot bring late-summer colour to the borders, with roses against the walls, low clipped hedging for structure, and irises and ferns softening the edge of the decking.
