Gravel, pond and rockery for year-round interest.
A small and quite exposed garden turned into a low-maintenance gravel garden with a pond and rockery, planned for interest all year round.
The brief
A garden that looks good in every season without needing constant work, in a small space open to the weather.
What we did
Warm golden gravel replaces lawn and bare soil. Large sandstone boulders form a rockery that steps down into a small pond, and a new timber fence with trellis gives shelter and support for climbers.
The planting
Clipped evergreen standards give structure through the winter. Around them, grasses, scabious, lavender and other tough plants grow up through the gravel, with climbers trained along the fence.
